            Mt. Taupo is a caldera. An eruption 27,000 years ago called the Oranui eruption was so huge it caused the volcanoe's top to collapse and be blasted off. This left a huge crater called a caldera where the volcano once was. Now the once big composite volcano was a caldera volcano. The caldera filled with water from nearby lake Taupo and has been coverd in water since. However Taupo is still active and has had some 25 minor eruptions in the past 5,000 years. The volcanoe's lava or magma is rhyolite. This magma will either errupt violently or form lava domes (look at picture below).
