The name Taupo comes from the word Taupo-nui-a-tia meaning "great clock of tia" in Maori mythology it was said Tia discovered the lake.
The town of Turangi (nearby Taupo) is the trout fishing capital of the world!
Taupo is the skydiving and bungee-jumping capital of the world!
Some boat tour companys on lake Taupo us special flat bottomed boats that can go in as little as 3-cm of water!
